First Film Festival.

I just went to my first film festival tonight. The Road To Emmaus, PA played at the Derby City Film Festival in Louisville, KY. It was great! It was awesome. It was fantastic. As a digital video editor, it’s always neat to see your stuff on the big screen. Plus I like the story. I think a good sign of one of my pieces is if I’m still entertained after watching it over and over. Even after seeing it again tonight for the billionth time, I was still entertained.

Anyway, the best part of tonight was that the people there…the people in the audience, chose to be there. For the past 15 years of my professional life, I’ve made lotsa corporate training videos and commercials. Not many people choose to watch a video on lab safety or executives doing wacky skits. They pretty much have to. Let alone, pay money to have a copy.

Now, I’ve had some very positive reactions to some of the videos I was able to work on. A large company gave a $100,000 check to my previous employer’s charitable organization after watching a video I had helped put together. Another piece had won the Mac Live award in 2006. John Calloway in his book “Category of One” had complimented my work and in a personal email said “Your work is masterful.” And so forth and so on.

This recognition is nice and all, but for the most part the audience either HAD to watch the video, or the video sat in the Manager’s office on the shelf with all the other videos we sent out. I don’t know that any of my previous videos anyone would have chosen to view a video on lab safety or why they should support the United Way.

This was the first time I was with an audience who CHOSE to be there. Whether they knew anything about the film or not, whether they liked it or not, they chose to be there. First time. That was a good feeling.

There’s going to be a showing of the film again at the Vineyard in Cincinnati on November 2. I have a feeling quite a few people will also choose to be there.

I'd love for you to come to the movie. Please consider this your personal invitation.
